After an overnight stay at Iron Bark Rest Area just south of Albury we headed north. Not sure where we would end up.
Gundagai came into view and we found some free camp sites on Wiki Camps. We pulled into Morley’s Creek Camp site just a short walk to town. Beautiful setting on the creek.

A little bit of history:
The original town of Gundagai was built on the flats where the Prince Alfred Bridge viaduct and rail bridge now cross. It was gazetted in 1838. In 1844 and 1851 the town was flooded and finally destroyed on 25 June 1852 by floods reaching 5 metres. This was the worst national disaster after 78 people lost their lives. In 1853 an even greater flood occurred.
Thereafter the present town sight was developed.

The bridge opened in 1867 and was named after Queen Victoria’s second son, Prince Alfred. He visited Australia in 1867-68 and he was the first member of the British Royal family to visit Australia. He was then aged 23 years.
The Rail bridge was completed in 1903 and carried the branch railway to Tumut for 82 years.
The Court House.

The Court House sits in pride of place with a view of the town. It was built in 1859 and behind the Court House is the gaol.
The Post Office

A beautiful building! Gundagai had the last official ‘pony express’ to deliver mail, a service which ceased in 1986.
St. Patrick’s Catholic Church

I had a chuckle when I took the photo of the steps and thought about all the brides who had walked nervously up them holding up their dress for fear of treading on it and falling!!!!
Well, one of our stops in the main street was the bakery. We bought the biggest cream bun you have ever seen. John said it was ‘bloody scrumptious’!!!!
Stay safe!!!
